  • 1990 Captain America Movie Coming to Blu-ray

Captain America: The First Avenger is coming out this summer and is sure to be a great movie but back in 1990 Marvel released a Direct-to-Video Captain America movie. Starring Matt Salinger as Captain America, the movie follows Steve Rogers becoming Captain America during World War II to battle the Red Skull, being frozen in ice, and subsequently being revived to save the President of the United States from a crime family that dislikes his environmentalist polices. You can check out the original trailer for the movie on YouTube below.

The 1990 movie version of Captain America is coming up on Blu-ray in May, just in time for the theatrical release of Captain America: The First Avenger. The movie will be presented in a director’s cut with 30 additional minutes of footage. According to director Albert Pyun, it will be “more character-oriented and less super hero action.”

  • Spider-Man’s First Appearance Sells for $1.1 Million

A copy of Spider-Man’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 with a rating of 9.6 sold Tuesday to the tune of $1.1 million. That ranks it’s sale as the second highest amount for a comic sale on record. I gotta say, it must be nice to have that kind of money to invest in a comic. I’ll settle for just reading a reprint and having that on my shelf.

Just one year after selling the comic book with the first appearance of Superman for $1.5 million, the people at ComicConnect.com have done it again, this time with the world’s most famous webhead.

Spider-Man’s first appearance in “Amazing Fantasy” #15 was sold to an anonymous buyer on Tuesday to the tune of $1.1 million. In a press release, ComicConnect.com – an online collectibles marketplace – ranked it as the world’s second most valuable comic book, after the aforementioned “Action Comics” #1, with Superman.

The auction site had previously sold “Detective Comics” #27, where Batman first appeared, for $1.0755 million back in February of 2010. Before last year, sought-after comics like this would never sell for seven figures.

Stephen Fishler, the CEO of ComicConnect.com, said that this sale of “Amazing Fantasy” #15 is a record for the Silver Age of comics from the late 1950s and early 1960s. “The sale of this book crushed all previous records. Up until today’s $1.1 million sale, the record sales price of a comic book from this era was $250,000.”

Fishler first acquired the book 25 years ago, and sold it for $2,500. He later acquired and sold it again for $140,000 in 2000. Fishler also created a widely-accepted grading scale in the years since (driving the prices of highly graded comics skyward), and this book is ranked as a 9.6 out of 10.

“The buyer of this amazing comic wanted to own the very best,” said ComicConnect.com partner Vincent Zuzolo. “The Amazing Fantasy #15 – 9.6 is the definition of the very best.”

Today, Columbia Pictures officially announced the title of the next Spider-Man film to be The Amazing Spider-Man. The studio simultaneously released a photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in full mask and suit. The film, now in production, is being shot entirely in 3D and will be released on July 3, 2012.

I have to say that it’s great to actually see web shooters on his wrists this time. Click the image to see a larger version of the photo.

One of my favorite bi-weekly titles is out today… Brightest Day!! I have to say that having Brightest Day and Generation Lost coming out every other week has been great. Both series will be soon be coming to an end but looking at all the upcoming Flashpoint releases I should be grateful. One limited series at long last finishes today, Time Masters: Vanishing Point. This series should have finished alongside of the Return of Bruce Wayne but both ran late. Speaking of late… Batman Odyssey is never on time.

Another week and more great reading on the way. At last the final set of Blackest Night Action Figures is released. Up next is the Brightest Day sets starting this summer. • SLAM-A-RAMA Issue 3 Available This Wednesday

Do you like reading comics? Do you like old school wrestling? If you answered yes to either or both of these questions then you have to check out SLAM-A-RAMA by Halifax’s own Dave Howlett. Available for purchase at Strange Adventures this coming Wednesday!

Here’s a write-up from the comic’s website to give you a little idea of what the comic is all about:

An online graphic novel set during the gaudy glory days of 1980s professional wrestling, SLAM-A-RAMA chronicles the events of the greatest night in sports entertainment history. Over the course of one fateful evening, a diverse cast of characters–some at the top of their game, others on the downward slope of their careers–will be tested by bone-crushing battles within the ring, as well as the harrowing personal dramas that await them backstage.

  • X-Men: First Class – First Picture

UPDATE JAN. 19: I’ve updated the leaked photo of the cast with a higher quality one. Director Matthew Vaughn says that it was not a pre-approved image. Obviously there was some confusion between Vaughn and Fox over this one as it was released by Fox.

MSN posted an image earlier today from the upcoming X-Men: First Class movie. The post has since been removed. Thankfully for us though… once it’s online it never goes away. I don’t know about you but I’m not all that excited about it yet. I’m hoping when we finally see a trailer for it that it will put my doubts about the film to rest.

Left to right, we see: Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, January Jones as Emma Frost, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havoc, Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and James McAvoy as Charles Xavier.

  • January 18 Pull List

Below… the list of this weeks releases that I’ll be picking up. I’m hoping Wolverine gets better and hoping for a good mini between Wolverine/Jubilee. Wolverine is the only one I’m thinking about dropping at the moment out of these.

UPDATE: Not thinking about dropping Wolverine anymore. That issue totally kept it on my list.

    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #652
